Fuel Switch recently procured and retired carbon credits that were issued by Credible Carbon and generated by the Tswalu Kalahari Carbon Project for the green building certification of one of our clients. The Fuel Switch platform is GBCSA approved, which ensures that it is a trusted and verified process. The Tswalu Kalahari Carbon Project is a South African initiative focused on ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation, and community development. This initiative shows how locally generated carbon credits can contribute to meaningful climate action while also supporting biodiversity conservation and community development within South Africa.
Restoring Ecosystems Through Rewilding:
The Tswalu Kalahari Carbon Project works to revive degraded landscapes through large-scale rewilding and responsible land management. These initiatives not only help remove carbon from the atmosphere and reduce emissions but also enhance the overall health and resilience of the ecosystem. Rewilding efforts at Tswalu have produced remarkable conservation results. Biodiversity surveys have recorded 75 mammal species, 70 dung beetle species, numerous protected plants, and several threatened carnivores. By restoring natural habitats and improving ecosystem function, the project plays a vital role in safeguarding South Africa’s natural heritage.
Creating Social Impact
The project’s impact goes beyond environmental restoration. In line with the Credible Carbon Standard’s commitment to social upliftment principles, 50% of carbon revenue is invested in welfare and poverty alleviation programs. The clinic serves not only project staff but also surrounding communities, extending the project’s benefits beyond the reserve. Since 2019, millions of rand have been invested in community development initiatives, and ongoing carbon revenue continues to expand these programs.
Local Carbon Credits with Real Impact
Projects like the Tswalu Kalahari Carbon Project demonstrate the value of supporting credible, locally generated carbon credits. By enabling organisations to retire credits from projects within South Africa, meaningful environmental and social outcomes can be achieved at the same time. Through partnerships with organisations such as Credible Carbon, our platform helps facilitate responsible climate action while supporting projects that contribute to conservation, biodiversity protection, and community development.
