Fuel Switch proudly celebrates its graduation from Cohort 2 of the SDG Blockchain Accelerator, marking a major milestone in advancing digital infrastructure for climate action and international trade compliance. As part of the programme, Fuel Switch partnered with UNDP Bosnia and Herzegovina to pilot an innovative system that enables renewable electricity exporters to meet the European Union’s upcoming Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) requirements using digitally verified Guarantees of Origin (GOOs).
Bosnia and Herzegovina is a significant electricity exporter to neighbouring countries, including EU member states. From 2026, under CBAM, imported electricity must demonstrate verifiable low-carbon origin or face carbon taxation.
Although the country produces substantial hydropower and an increasing share of solar energy, all electricity feeds into a single mixed grid. Without an internationally recognised tracking mechanism, renewable exports risk being classified as carbon-intensive by default. This creates serious economic risks, including higher export costs, reduced competitiveness, potential job losses, and slowed progress on the green transition.
Fuel Switch and UNDP Bosnia and Herzegovina are piloting a blockchain-powered digital certification of renewable energy via Guarantees of Origin, so that exporters can demonstrate clean energy compliance. The platform enables reliable, transparent proof of renewable electricity generation even when power flows through a mixed grid.
The pilot tests whether a blockchain-secured certification system can:
Accredited renewable generators connect to the Fuel Switch platform through a secure API that receives real-time production data from grid operators. For every verified megawatt-hour of renewable electricity, the system issues a unique Guarantee of Origin in line with international standards.
Each certificate is:
When GOOs are bundled with electricity export contracts and retired, the platform generates CBAM-ready documentation that links each shipment directly to its renewable source. All lifecycle events are immutably recorded, providing exporters, regulators, and EU partners with trusted evidence of compliance.
By combining blockchain technology with energy certification, Fuel Switch is enabling a new level of transparency, trust, and market access for renewable energy exporters. This pilot demonstrates how digital infrastructure can protect economic value, accelerate decarbonisation, and support international climate policy implementation.
