Enabling Energy Performance Tracking for Companies in the Clean Energy Economy

At Fuel Switch, our mission is to make clean energy participation accessible, transparent, and financially rewarding for businesses across South Africa. Today, we're proud to take another step toward that goal by welcoming SOLTRAK, a leading renewable energy performance tracking service, to our growing network of working relationships.

SOLTRAK's first registered client on our platform is Paarman Foods, whose warehouse solar installation has now been formally registered with Fuel Switch. This marks the beginning of their journey toward generating Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).

What are RECs, and why do they matter?

A Renewable Energy Certificate, or REC, is a market-based instrument that certifies the generation of one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity from a renewable source. For every MWh of clean energy produced by a solar installation, one REC is generated.

RECs serve a critical function in South Africa's energy transition. They provide a standardised, verifiable way for businesses to prove, and be rewarded for, their renewable energy production. Whether held, sold, or retired, RECs give clean energy real, tradable value.

How Fuel Switch enables clients like SOLTRAK

SOLTRAK does what it does exceptionally well. It provides commercial and industrial clients with a live monitoring platform that delivers full transparency into solar asset performance. But monitoring alone doesn't unlock the financial value of those assets.

That's where Fuel Switch comes in. By partnering with us, SOLTRAK gains access to the infrastructure needed to formally register their clients' solar installations and begin managing their RECs. We handle the registration, certification, transfer and redemption on their behalf.

The bigger picture

Businesses of every size are investing in solar, driven by energy security concerns, sustainability commitments, and the improving economics of renewable technology. Yet many of these investments remain partially unlocked. The energy is generated, but the certificates that represent and monetise the carbon component of the energy are never issued.
